The Žižkov Barracks are located in the protective zone of the city’s UNESCO heritage conservation area and are part of the city's historical development. Although the facade of the building is historically valuable, the object completed more than 120 years ago is not a cultural monument. As part of the reconstruction, the facade will be sensitively restored, and the entire building will continue to be in harmony with the character of the area. In addition to offices and facilities for employees in the barracks, after the completion, the conservationists also plan to include depositories, a library, an archive, a research room, a multifunctional hall, and a visitor center.
For example, the façade will undergo repairs to the ornaments and arches, restoration work will touch various coats of arms, grilles, or entrance doors that must be preserved. In addition to restoration work, the internal layout will be modified, the building will gain an entirely new roof, and heating will be provided by geothermal wells. The entire project is financed from the budget of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, under the SMVS program for the development and renewal of the material-technical base of state cultural institutions. The Žižka barracks were purchased from the City of Kroměříž (for a symbolic four crowns) in 2020 by the National Heritage Institute, which is a contributory organization of the Ministry of Culture. After their renovation, both Kroměříž offices of the NPÚ will move here. One manages state heritage sites in Moravia and Silesia, while the other focuses on heritage care in the Zlín region.
